Cencora Data Breach Results in Leak of Confidential Information Provided to PTC Therapeutics, Inc.

On May 15, 2024, Cencora, Inc. filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of California after discovering that a cyberattack compromised information provided to Cencora by PTC Therapeutics, Inc. In this notice, Cencora explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names, addresses, dates of birth, health diagnoses, and medications & prescriptions. What Caused the Cencora Data Breach?

The Cencora data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Cencora’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, Cencora and its affiliates partner with pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies, and healthcare providers to facilitate access to therapies through drug distribution, patient support and services, and other services.

On February 21, 2024, Cencora learned that certain information that was stored on the company’s IT network was stolen. In response, Cencora contained the incident and then launched an investigation with the assistance of third-party data security experts. Cencora also reported the incident to law enforcement.

On April 10, 2024, the Cencora investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access personal information that was stored on Cencora’s systems, including information that was provided to Cencora by PTC Therapeutics.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Cencora reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.
