The United States Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) issued a May 13th report titled:

U.S. Energy-Related CO2 Emissions Rose 6% in 2021

EIA states that carbon dioxide (“CO2”) emissions increased by 296 million metric tons, a 6% increase, compared with 2020 levels.

EIA states that the increase is due to an increase in economic activity and energy consumption subsequent to the initial economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2021 increase is, however, estimated to be lower than the 2019 pre-pandemic level by 5% and 19% lower than the 2007 historical level.

The major contributing sectors to the rising energy-related CO2 emissions are stated to be the transportation and electric power sectors. However, United States industrial and commercial sector energy-related CO2 emissions are stated to have only grown slightly.
