  • Missouri AG Andrew Bailey filed a lawsuit against Taxslayer LLC, H&R Block Inc., and TaxAct Inc. alleging that the tax preparation companies violated the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act by sharing consumers’ sensitive data with large technology firms without the consumers’ consent, which is then allegedly used for advertising purposes.
  • According to the complaint, despite representing to consumers that their private data was secure, the tax preparation companies allegedly used computer code, or “pixels,” on its website to collect data, which allegedly resulted in sharing consumers’ personal, financial, and tax return information with the large technology companies.
  • AG Bailey seeks a permanent injunction, restitution for affected consumers, a civil penalty, and other relief.
