What Caused the Evolution Payroll Services Data Breach?

The Evolution Payroll Services data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, EPS’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on January 18, 2024, EPS learned of a possible data security incident involving an employee email account. In response, EPS secured the email account and then launched an investigation with the help of third-party cybersecurity experts.

Through this investigation, EPS learned that an unauthorized party gained access to a single employee email account and may have accessed certain data stored therein.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Evolution Payroll Services reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. EPS completed this process on April 22, 2024. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name and Social Security number.

On May 7, 2024, Evolution Payroll Services sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
