Minnesota AG To Google Chief: “911 Emergency!”

  • Minnesota AG Keith Ellison wrote a letter to Alphabet, Inc. CEO Sundar Pichai urging him to address a software update to Google’s Android mobile operating system that has resulted in a surge of unintentional 911 calls within the state. (Alphabet is Google LLC’s parent company.)
  • According to the letter, Google recently updated Android’s “Emergency SOS” feature to automatically initiate a call to 911 when a user taps the power button of an Android phone five consecutive times. AG Ellison described a massive rise in accidental calls following the update that is straining the resources of Minnesota 911 centers and local law enforcement.
  • AG Ellison asked Google to immediately resolve the issue and to provide the OAG with detailed information regarding when and how a solution will be implemented.
