  • The FTC announced the launch of an Office of Technology to be headed by Chief Technology Officer Stephanie T. Nguyen. The new office is meant to expand in-house technological expertise related to the FTC’s mission, and to bring the FTC in line with the capabilities of other leading antitrust and consumer protection enforcers globally.
  • The Office of Technology will provide insight on technologies involved in investigations, provide technological expertise on non-enforcement actions such as studies and reports, and engage with public and external stakeholders on emerging technologies and other issues. The office plans to have representation across a range of specialized fields, including security and software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, human-computer interaction design, and social science research related to technology.
  • This move comes as the FTC under current Chair Lina Khan has undertaken a number of actions scrutinizing technology firms and continued its enforcement against companies over data security incidents and data collection activities.
