Illegal robocalls – including brand impersonation and other fraudulent calls – continue to be a major focus for the entire voice ecosystem. A group of experts from @GSMA, @Verizon, @YouMail, @TNSI and @ACULAB joined a panel today at Mobile World Congress in Las Vegas to discuss voice fraud, as well as ongoing and new tools and approaches to fight it.

Panelists discussed the important work that industry has deployed to fight illegal robocalls, including U.S. leadership in deploying STIR/SHAKEN and establishing robust traceback efforts. Given the global nature of the issue, panelists also discussed the importance of expanding these efforts internationally.

A main focus of the panel was discussing what more industry can do through continued innovation. Panelists acknowledged that illegal robocalls are a collective, global problem, and they discussed new approaches that can expand existing tools to further mitigate them. In particular, GSMA and Verizon discussed a new project that is still in its formative stage: Global Telecom Trust Registry (GLTTR). As described at today’s panel, GLTTR is intended to be a baseline “know your customer” tool that will add to the existing suite of robocall mitigation tools. GLTTR will be a global registry of the voice service provider ecosystem that will aggregate a variety of risk assessment resources from around the world and provide an aggregate conduct score. The goal is to help to bring together a community of “good actors” who can leverage the registry to research and make informed decisions in order to counter illegal robocalls internationally and ensure legitimate international traffic is unimpeded.
