On October 12, Nossaman and UC Irvine hosted their first annual cyber symposium at the Los Angeles City Club.  The event brought experts together to discuss a variety of critical issues in the worlds of privacy and data security.  The event kicked off with an hour-long presentation from UCI School of Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, who discussed opinions from the last Supreme court term, and highlighted important cases that will be heard in the coming year.  Dean Chemerinsky was followed by four panels: insurance, forensics, commercial application, and public policy, which addressed a number of critical themes and issues being observed in the areas of privacy and data security.  Some of the key discussion points included:

  • The quickly-evolving standards and government regulations impacting privacy and information sharing,
  • Multi-pronged efforts to ensure that those combating the increasingly-sophisticated cyber criminals stay educated and trained, and
  • Approaches to eliminate or minimize financial risk from data breaches.

The panelists and moderators included Nossaman’s in-house privacy and insurance experts, in-house counsel for companies such as Google, Sony, and Square, partners at major consulting and law firms such as KPMG, and renowned professors and executives from preeminent universities, including UCI.

The symposium was widely attended, and received excellent feedback.  Thomas Dover, the co-chair of Nossaman’s privacy litigation subgroup, lauded the symposium, “We are privileged to team with UC Irvine to host this symposium with some of the preeminent privacy professionals in the country.  Privacy and data security are important issues for everyone: companies, public agencies, universities and individuals.  We hope that we can use our resources to inform and educate on the current issues we are all facing, and to identify trends in the area that could portend the issues that we will be facing in the coming months and years.”  This was the first of three annual symposiums scheduled with Nossaman and UC Irvine.
