The transition to renewable energy in Africa has been progressing impressively over the last decade, with many countries working to increase renewable energy capacity in recent years. Forecasts by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) indicate that with the right policies, regulation, governance and access to financial markets, sub-Saharan Africa could meet up to 67% of its energy needs by 2030. This is reflected by the fact that average annual investments in renewable energy grew ten-fold from less than $.5 billion in the 2000-2009 period to $5 billion in 2010-2020.

On March 30, McDermott partners Carl Fleming and Emeka Chinwuba will host Dr. Abdelilah Chami, head of sustainability, Northern & Central Africa, at Enel Green Power and Jay Katatumba, investment director at Africa50 Infrastructure Fund for a lively discussion on Africa and cross-border investments. This is part of the Future of the Energy Transition Webinar Series.

During this 30-minute, complimentary webinar, we will cover:

  • Which African markets hold the most opportunity for successful renewable investments and the highest project returns?
  • What sort of policies, regulation, governance and access to financial markets are required to promote further renewable investment opportunities in Africa?
  • How are cross-border investments in Africa being structured and what role are African governments taking to make these projects bankable?
  • What role if any will tech giants, large corporates and their associated data centers play in Africa’s energy future?

McDermott’s Washington, London and Paris offices recently advised a leading developer on the development, construction and financing on both the largest utility scale and the largest distributed generation solar projects in Angola and on the continent.
