Yucaipa Latest California City to Replace Stop Signs with Roundabouts

We have seen a trend where local agencies are choosing to replace stop-sign and signal controlled intersections with roundabouts.  The concept is not new; we see them throughout Europe and on the East Coast.  But until recently, there weren’t many out West.  But that is changing and the City of Yucaipa is one of many embracing the new model.  According to this post in the Yucaipa/Calimesa News Mirror, last month the Yucaipa City Council adopted plans for roundabouts at 6 intersections:

  • Yucaipa Boulevard & Bryant Street
  • Avenue E & Bryant Street
  • Avenue E & 2nd Street
  • Avenue E & 3rd Street
  • Avenue E & 4th Street
  • Avenue E & 5th Street

It is not surprising that roundabouts have become more popular.  They are considered safer for vehicles and pedestrians, better for traffic flow, and more environmentally friendly.  (For a more technical discussion, read the Federal Highway Safety’s article on roundabouts.)  But they do have at least one downside relevant to our readers — they usually require more right of way acquisitions than traditional intersection improvements.  In Yucaipa, there will be impacts to several residences, a few businesses and even a church.  It is too soon to tell how significant those impacts will be, but you can find the City’s preliminary right of way maps report.

Owners of impacted properties in Yucaipa, or any other place, should check out our Property Owner’s Survival Guide for some general information about the process.
