The organization American Rivers has issued its annual list of what it describes as “America’s Most Endangered Rivers”.
The organization, American Rivers, describes itself as:
…championing a national effort to protect and restore all rivers, from remote mountain streams to urban waterways.
American Rivers develops its top ten list through a review of nominations from river Groups and individuals across the country. It states that rivers are selected based upon the following criteria:
- A major decision that the public can help influence in the coming year on the proposed action
- The significance of the river to people and nature
- The magnitude of threat to the river and its communities, and especially in light of climate change and racial injustice.
The top ten endangered rivers according to the organization for 2024 include:
- Rivers of New Mexico
- Big Sunflower and Yazoo Rivers, Mississippi
- Duck River, Tennessee
- Santa Cruz River, Arizona
- Little Pee Dee River, South Carolina, North Carolina
- Farmington River, Connecticut, Massachusetts
- Trinity River, California
- Kobuk River, Alaska
- Tijuana River/Rio Tijuana, California
- Black Water River, West Virginia
