U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and U.S. Representatives Debbie Dingell (D-MI) and Don Young (R-AK) introduced the “Keep Food Containers Safe from PFAS Act of 2021” (S.3169, H.R. 6026). This Act seeks to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to prohibit the sale of food packaging containing intentionally added PFAS chemicals. If passed, the Act would become effective January 1, 2024, thereby allowing manufacturers approximately 24 months to reformulate packaging to remove the intentional incorporation of PFAS from their product lines. This bill underscores not only bipartisan support for PFAS regulation, but also the multi-agency effort to regulate this class of chemicals.
