Congress

Today, House Speaker Pelosi named Democratic Members to serve on the newly-created Select Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis; House Republican Leader McCarthy has yet to name GOP Members.

Speaker Pelosi concluded a Dear Colleague letter discussing the new committee with a short update on the next relief package: “Thanks to our distinguished Committee Chairs, we are making progress in shaping CARES 2, starting with honoring our heroes in the fight.”

She also informed Members that a House working group continues efforts to develop a plan for remote voting – with expectations for “options that we can vote on upon our return.”

Meanwhile, in comments to the press today, Senate Majority Leader McConnell again confirmed the Senate’s plans to return to Washington this coming Monday:
  • “… we're willing to discuss with the Democrats the way forward, but we're going to do it with all Senators here and not back in their home states. We’re all going to be here, and we believe we can man the Senate in a way that’s consistent with good practices, the proper spacing, masks where appropriate. We believe we can conduct the people’s business, and we intend to.”
  • Leader McConnell also reiterated that Republicans would insist upon liability protections for frontline workers.
