On April 21, 2022, Governor DeWine signed into law House Bill 175.  House Bill 175 includes a provision requiring the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to begin the process of seeking primacy over Class VI injection wells for carbon sequestration from the United States Environmental Protection Agency no later than 90 days after the effective date of the bill. The legislation takes effect on July 19, 2022.  

Carbon sequestration is a process by which carbon dioxide is captured, transported, and injected into underground formations for long-term geologic sequestration.  The United States Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act specifically dedicated $75 million for states to obtain primacy for their own Class VI injection wells.
