The U.S. General Services Administration (“GSA”) issued a November 6th news release announcing a $2 billion investment for federal construction projects that use low-embodied carbon (“LEC”) materials.
The LEC materials will be utilized at more than 150 construction projects. The projects are stated to be located in 39 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
One project is located in the State of Arkansas.
GSA states that the Little Rock Federal Building parking lot repaving project will utilize the following LEC materials:
The purpose of using LEC is to reduce embodied carbon from construction materials. Asphalt, concrete, glass, and steel are described as some of the most carbon-intensive construction materials. They are stated to account for nearly half of all United States manufacturing greenhouse gas emissions.
GSA states that if demand for LEC materials is increased it will:
- Strengthen the United States Industrial Base
- Catalyze Innovation
- Stimulate Job Growth in Industries Producing Next-Generation Materials
GSA states that the 150 federal government building projects prioritizing procurement of LEC materials will include:
- $384 million for asphalt
- $767 million for concrete
- $464 million for glass
- $388 million for steel
