On March 15, 2018, the CRE and CENACE launched the Fourth Long-Term Renewable Energy Auction. This will be the first long-term auction administered by the CRE, as the previous three auctions were administered by Mexico’s Ministry of Energy (SENER). The goal of the Fourth-Long Term Auction is to introduce an additional 13,000 MW of generation and 38 TWh of clean energy into the Mexican electricity market for 2021.

As with the previous auctions, the Fourth Long-Term Auction will allow Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and other private offtakers to enter into long-term contracts of between 15 and 20 years to acquire energy, power and clean energy certificates.

According to the calendar published by CENACE, the auction rules will be published on March 28, 2018, the results are expected on November 2, 2018, and the execution of the contracts will take place on February 15, 2019. Commercial operation for the awarded projects is expected on January 1, 2021.

According to the press release issued by the Mexican government, Mexico has become one of the preferred destinations for international renewable energy developers and because of this, Mexico is ranked as one of the top 10 countries with major clean-energy investment in the world.
