Congress and the Colorado General Assembly are both back in session, and there’s a lot of news to catch up on. Here are your public-law highlights:

  • Colorado Supreme Court issues major oil and gas decision. Attorney Chris Jackson was interviewed on Next with Kyle Clark about the Colorado Supreme Court’s recent decision in the Martinez case, which held that regulators don’t need to make health and safety a top priority in setting rules for oil and gas development.
  • Masterpiece Cakeshop case moves forward. The Colorado Springs Gazette quoted attorney Chris Jackson in its coverage of a federal district court’s decision to allow Masterpiece Cakeshop’s lawsuit against the state to move forward.
  • New appellate judges. Colorado’s Court of Appeals has two new jurists: Lino S. Lipinsky de Orlov and Matt D. Grove. And the court is about to get two more: Judge Karen Ashby is retiring and Judge Laurie Booras resigned after an investigation by the Colorado Commission on Judicial Discipline.
  • Electoral College bill advances. The Colorado State Senate passed a bill that would give the state’s electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote in the next presidential election.
