Unfortunately, it was a record breaking year in the State of New York for data breaches. The New York Attorney General (AG) released his annual data breach report, which announced that the AG’s Office received 1,282 data breach notices in 2016, affecting 1.6 million New York residents.

The number one and two causes for data breaches in New York last year was hacking (40 percent), and employee negligence, which includes employee negligence and inadvertent exposure and device loss (37 percent).

According to the AG, “[T]he total annual number of reported security breaches increased by 60 percent and the number of exposed personal records tripled…”

While depressing, the report substantiates all of our predictions and fears: that data compromise will continue to be a major issue for businesses in 2017 and is not going away.
