Status Report on the Exclusion Request Process for National Security Duties on Steel and Aluminum

[author: Barbara Medrado]

On June 20, 2018, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced that the Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has begun granting its first product exclusions from the Section 232 tariffs on imports of steel.  In the initial wave of decisions, the BIS granted 42 approvals and issued 56 denials of exclusion requests.  Since then, parties have filed more than 17 thousand requests seeking exclusions from the national security tariffs on steel and more than 1300 requests seeking exclusions from the national security tariffs on aluminum. BIS has been posting decisions on steel and aluminum exclusion requests on an ongoing basis.  The list of decisions on exclusion requests for the national security tariffs can be viewed at regulations.gov under steel docket number BIS-2018-0006 and aluminum docket number BIS-2018-0002.
