What Caused the Just Kids Dental Breach?

The Just Kids Dental data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, JKD’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on August 8, 2023, Just Kids Dental learned that the week before, on August 2, 2023, the company was targeted in a cyberattack. Evidently, hackers used a program to encrypt JKD’s computer networks as well as the data stored on these systems. JKD reports that this included certain systems that the company uses to store patient and employee files.

In response, JKD secured its systems and launched an investigation with the help of subject-matter experts. The JKD investigation confirmed that the unauthorized party responsible for the attack was able to access confidential information belonging to certain patients and employees.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Just Kids Dental reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, address, email, phone number(s), birth date, driver’s license number, health insurance policy information, treatment information including radiographic images, medical record number, account number, and health conditions.

On September 1, 2023, Just Kids Dental sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
