What Caused the Acrisure Data Breach?

The Acrisure data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Acrisure’s filing with the Attorney General of Montana provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on December 28, 2022, Acrisure detected unusual activity within its computer network. In response, Acrisure notified law enforcement and then began working with third-party data security specialists to investigate the incident.

The Acrisure investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access portions of its computer network that contained files storing confidential consumer information. The dates of unauthorized access are believed to have been between December 1, 2022 to January 28, 2023.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Acrisure reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.

On November 10, 2023, Acrisure sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. Unfortunately, the publicly available data breach letter posted on the Montana Attorney General’s “Reported Data Breach Incidents” web page does not detail what type of information was leaked. However, the individual data breach letters mailed out by Acrisure should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
