  • Artificial intelligence remains a focal point for state and federal regulators. Washington AG Bob Ferguson recently convened the inaugural meeting of the state’s AI Task Force, while the FTC, DOJ, and international antitrust enforcers issued a joint statement underscoring their commitment to fostering fair competition in the rapidly expanding AI market.
  • Washington AG Bob Ferguson hosted the first meeting of the state’s AI Task Force, bringing together technology experts, civil liberty groups, and other stakeholders to discuss the benefits and challenges of AI. Created with bipartisan support, the AI Task Force aims to provide policy recommendations to the state legislature on guidelines and potential legislation for AI systems. The task force will consider topics including intellectual property, AI’s impact on safety and fundamental rights, racial disparities in AI systems, worker protection, innovation, and transparency.
  • The FTC, DOJ, and international antitrust enforcers issued a Joint Statement on Competition in Generative AI Foundation Models and AI Products, committing to ensuring that the development and application of generative AI remains competitive and fair for consumers. The statement acknowledges the “transformational potential” of AI technologies while recognizing the associated risks that could undermine market competition.  The agencies highlighted a shared focus on fair dealing, interoperability, and choice to foster innovation and competition. While acknowledging that potential harms may be shared across borders, the statement clarifies that U.S. decision-making remains independent and sovereign.
