On August 7, 2023, American National Group, better known as American National Insurance Company (“ANICO”), filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Texas after discovering that confidential information that had been entrusted to the company was accessible to an unauthorized party. In this notice, ANICO explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names, Social Security numbers, addresses, financial account information and medical information. Upon completing its investigation, ANICO began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What Caused the American National Breach?

The American National data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. ANICO’s filing with the Attorney General of Texas provides only limited information about the incident. According to this source, American National Insurance recently learned about a potential data security incident. After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, American National reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, address, financial account information and medical information.

Notably, The Record published an article on July 11, 2023, that contains a quote from American National indicating that the company used MOVEit, which is a file transfer application created by Progress Software. In this article, American National explains that on July 7, 2023, it became aware that the Cl0p ransomware group listed the company as a victim. At that time, American National was investigating Cl0p’s claims to determine their validity. Thus, it is possible that American National’s recent filing with the Texas Attorney General is referring to a MOVEit breach. However, this has not yet been confirmed by American National.

American National will likely soon be sending out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
