In this notice, American Trust explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, state identification numbers, financial account numbers, and dates of birth. Upon completing its investigation, American Trust began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What Caused the American Trust Data Breach?

The American Trust data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, American Trust’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts provides some important information on what led up to the breach. American Trust also posted a website notice that provides additional details about the incident.

According to these sources, on August 13, 2024, American Trust detected suspicious activity within its email system. In response, American Trust secured its systems and then launched an investigation to learn more about the incident.

Through this investigation, American Trust confirmed that certain emails may have been copied without authorization between August 8, 2024, and August 13, 2024. After learning that certain emails were accessible to an unauthorized party, American Trust reviewed the compromised emails and attachments to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. American Trust completed this process on December 5, 2024. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, driver’s license number, state identification number, financial account number, and date of birth.

On December 31, 2024, American Trust sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
