What Caused the Americold Logistics Data Breach?

The Americold Logistics data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected shortly. However, Americold’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. Prior to filing this notice, Americold previously filed notice of the incident with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

According to these sources, on April 26, 2023, Americold learned that its computer system had been the target of a cyberattack. In response, Americold took the affected systems offline to contain the incident. Then, working with cybersecurity experts and legal counsel, Americold launched an investigation to determine the nature and extent of the incident. Americold also reported the attack to law enforcement.

The Americold investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access portions of its computer network, including files containing confidential consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Americold Logistics reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.

On December 8, 2023, Americold Logistics sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
