The United States Energy Administration (“EIA”) issued a June 26th report noting that for the first time United States monthly electricity generation from renewable sources exceeded coal-fired generation.

The data originates from EIA’s publication Electric Power Monthly.

EIA notes the following percentages for April:

  • Renewable Sources – 23%
  • Coal – 20%

Describing the results, EIA notes:

This outcome reflects both seasonal factors as well as long-term increases in renewable generation and decreases in coal generation.

Renewable electricity generation is characterized as including utility-scale:

  • Hydropower
  • Wind
  • Solar
  • Geothermal
  • Biomass
