On October 6, 2023, Auto Club Trust, FSB (“ACT”), filed notice with the Attorney General of Maine describing a third-party data breach related to the file-transfer program MOVEit. In this notice, ACT explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names, contact information, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, and bank account information. Upon completing its investigation, ACT began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

If you received a data breach notification from Auto Club Trust, FSB, it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. While this incident didn’t affect ACT’s computer system, it did affect Auto Club Trust customers. This is because hackers were able to access confidential customer data through a third-party data breach. What Caused the Data Breach Affecting Auto Club Trust Customers?

The Auto Club Trust vendor data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, ACT’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, Auto Club Trust recently learned that one of its third-party service providers experienced a data security incident related to that company’s use of MOVEit, a popular file-transfer software.

Evidently, ACT’s vendor used MOVEit in the regular course of business, and on May 31, 2023, the creator of MOVEit (Progress Software) announced a vulnerability within its software. This vulnerability allowed unauthorized parties to access information stored on MOVEit servers, including the one belonging to ACT’s vendor.

After conducting an investigation, ACT’s vendor determined that certain files containing confidential consumer data were accessible to an unauthorized party between May 29, 2023 and May 31, 2023.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Auto Club Trust reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, contact information, Social Security number, driver’s license number, passport number, and bank account information.

On October 6, 2023, Auto Club Trust sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
