Average State Tax Rates for Retail Gasoline/Diesel Fuel Since January 2024: U.S. Energy Information Administration Report

The United States Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) issued an August 20th report titled:

Average State Tax Rates for Retail Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Flat Since January 2024 (“Report”).

The Report concludes that the national average tax rates were nearly flat as of July 1, 2024.

State taxes and fees on gasoline and diesel fuel were stated to average $0.33 per gallon of gasoline and $0.35 per gallon of diesel fuel.

Exceptions were noted. Kentucky had the largest decrease from $0.023 to $0.2780 per gallon.

Gasoline taxes are stated to have increased in nine states. The largest increase was in Indiana, whose rate rose from $0.044 to $0.5610 per gallon.

Federal tax rates remain at $0.1840 per gallon for gasoline and $0.2440 per gallon for diesel. This includes excise tax and $0.001 per gallon assessed for the Leaking Underground Storage Tank Fund.

Note that the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration list the following for two motor fuels:

  • Gasoline $0.247 per gallon.
  • Clear Diesel $0.285 per gallon.
