What Caused the Baxter International Data Breach?

The Baxter International data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Baxter’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on June 10, 2024, Baxter learned that an unauthorized party was able to gain access to its computer network and download certain files.

In response, Baxter secured its system and then began working with third-party data security experts to investigate the incident and what impact it may have had on consumer data in the company’s possession.

Ultimately, Baxter’s investigation confirmed that the unauthorized party was able to access files containing confidential consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Baxter International reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. Baxter recently completed this process.

On August 8, 2024, Baxter International sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. Unfortunately, the publicly available data breach letter available on the California Attorney General’s website does not mention what data types were affected. However, the personalized data breach letters that the company recently sent out should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
