On June 13, 2023, Bi-Bett Corporation filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of California after discovering that an unauthorized party was able to access an employee’s email account containing sensitive patient information. In this notice, Bi-Bett explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their first and last names, addresses, Social Security Numbers, driver's license numbers, Medicaid numbers, and medical reference numbers. Upon completing its investigation, Bi-Bett began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

If you received a data breach notification from Bi-Bett Corporation, it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. Behavioral health and addiction treatment centers have become a common target for hackers, in large part because these organizations store a wealth of confidential information about their patients. The unfortunate reality for patients is that these incidents significantly increase the risk of experiencing identity theft and other frauds. A data breach lawyer can help you learn more about how to protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft as well as discuss your legal options following the Bi-Bett data breach. What Caused the Bi-Bett Breach?

The Bi-Bett data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Bi-Bett’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on February 17, 2023, Bi-Bett identified suspicious activity within an employee’s email account. In response, Bi-Bett secured the affected account and launched an investigation with the help of outside cybersecurity specialists.

On April 14, 2023, Bi-Bett confirmed that an unauthorized party had gained access to the employee’s email account and that the account contained confidential information belonging to certain patients.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Bi-Bett reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. Bo-Bett completed this process on May 22, 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your first and last name, address, Social Security Number, driver's license number, Medicaid number, and medical reference number.

On June 13, 2023, Bi-Bett sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of which information of theirs was compromised.
