Biogen and Bio-Thera Solutions Announce Collaboration on Proposed Actemra® (Tocilizumab) Biosimilar

This month, Biogen and Bio-Thera announced a commercialization and license agreement for their proposed tocilizumab biosimilar, currently in Phase 3 trials for the treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. BAT1806, a proposed biosimilar to Genentech’s ACTEMRA®, is an anti-interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor monoclonal antibody indicated primarily for moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis in adults, as well as juvenile idiopathic polyarthritis, systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, giant cell arteritis and cytokine release syndrome.  Biogen stated that under the terms of the agreement with Bio-Thera, it will “gain exclusive regulatory, manufacturing and commercial rights to BAT1806 in all countries excluding China (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan).”
