What Caused the Kids Care Dental Data Breach?

The Kids Care Dental data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Kids Care’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. Kids Care also posted a notice on its website discussing the incident.

According to these sources, on June 17, 2023, Kids Care detected suspicious activity within its computer network. In response, Kids Care Dental & Orthodontics secured its system, notified law enforcement, and then started an investigation with the help of third-party data security specialists to learn more about the cyberattack and whether any patient information was compromised as a result.

Ultimately, this investigation revealed that an unauthorized party had been able to access Kids Care’s IT network on June 15, 2023, including files containing confidential patient information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Kids Care Dental reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. Kids Care completed this process on February 29, 2024. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, driver’s license number, state identification number, date of birth, medical information, health insurance information, billing & claim information, and health insurance information.

On March 7, 2024, Kids Care Dental sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
