On July 1, 2024, CalRecycle published an updated list of covered material categories as required by California’s extended producer responsibility (EPR) law. SB 54 was signed into law by Governor Newsom in June 2022 and established California’s EPR law, the Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act. This law applies to “covered materials,” and requires CalRecycle to publish a list of covered material categories.

The July list updates the list CalRecycle published in December 2023, but does not update the determinations of recyclability and compostability included in the December list. CalRecycle will update its determinations of recyclability and compostability annually starting January 1, 2025.

CalRecycle’s covered material categories lists can be found here.

This document provides an update of covered material categories. However, it does not include an update to determinations of recyclability or compostability by CMC.
