On April 3, 2023, Capita PLC posted an “update on cyber incident” notice on its website after learning that the company was the recent target of a ransomware attack. While the company’s investigation is ongoing, it is possible that hackers were able to obtain confidential consumer information stored on Capita’s network. If so, Capita will be required to provide notice to anyone affected by the recent data security incident.

If you received a data breach notification from Capita, it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. As we’ve mentioned in previous posts, hackers go to tremendous lengths to gain access to corporate networks in hopes of obtaining highly sensitive information. Often, the most valuable data relates to individuals, such as their Social Security numbers, bank account information, credit card numbers, and medical information. Hackers can then use this information to commit fraud against the victims, such as identity theft. To learn more about how to protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft and what your legal options are in the wake of the Capita data breach, you should speak with an experienced data breach lawyer.

What We Know So Far About a Possible Capita Breach

News of the Capita ransomware attack is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the various posts on the company’s website. On April 3, 2023, Capita posted an “update on cyber incident” on its website after learning that the company had been targeted in a ransomware attack.

Initially, Capita told the public that it did not believe any consumer data was leaked as a result of the attack, clearly stating that there was “no evidence of customer, supplier or colleague data having been compromised.” However, on April 9, 2023, a well-known ransomware gang took credit for the attack.

Then, on April 20, 2023, Capita posted another update, indicating that the available evidence suggests that certain data was removed from the company’s computer network. Thus, it appears that Capita’s investigation has confirmed that certain data was stolen; however, the company did not elaborate. It is likely that Capita is still in the process of conducting its investigation.

If the Capita investigation confirms that confidential consumer data was among that which was compromised, the company will be required to send data breach letters to anyone whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
