On March 7, 2016, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) announced that it has begun accepting complaints from consumers that have problems with loans from online marketplace lenders. In conjunction with the release of this announcement, the CFPB also released a two page consumer bulletin that aims to provide an overview of online marketplace lending. This bulletin also outlines the CFPB’s “tips for consumers who are considering taking out loans from these types of lenders.” This announcement appears to foreshadow the CFPB’s likely entry into the regulatory matrix for online marketplace lending.
