While the country- and region-specific tariffs went into effect as of midnight, a post on Truth Social by President Donald Trump indicates some immediate changes to tariffs on imports from China and country-specific reciprocal tariffs. The changes based on this Truth Social post and statements from the administration include:
China: Imports from China will be subject to a tariff of 125% effective immediately.
Reciprocal Tariffs: The country- and region-specific tariffs are paused for a 90-day period, effective immediately. In place of these country- and region-specific tariffs, the base tariff of 10% will apply for reciprocal tariffs for this 90-day period while negotiations continue with those countries.
Canada and Mexico: There is some reporting that the base 10% tariff will now also apply to imports from Canada and Mexico on top of the 25% tariff already imposed. This would be contrary to the orders issued last week. We expect further clarification on this point in the coming hours/days.
We will issue further updates if there are further announcements or orders issued clarifying if any countries subject to the specific tariffs continue with the specific reciprocal tariffs rather than the 10% base tariff.
