What Caused the CKF Addiction Treatment Data Breach?

The CKF Addiction Treatment data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, at this point, CKF’s filing with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights provides little information on what led up to the breach.

According to this source, we know that the breach involved a “Hacking / IT incident” targeting one or more email accounts. However, what we don’t know is whether the attack was against CKF or if hackers targeted one of CKF’s vendors that was in possession of confidential data that had been provided to CKF.

Regardless, after learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, CKF Addiction Treatment reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. Unfortunately, CKF’s recent filing doesn’t list the type of information that was leaked; however, only those breaches that involve the protected health information (“PHI”) of 500 or more people must be reported to the HHS. Thus, it is likely the incident involved PHI, and possibly other data types.

On November 17, 2023, CKF Addiction Treatment sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. While CKF’s notice with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights does not list the data types that were leaked, the data breach letters being sent out by CKF are addressed to individual victims and should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
