On October 3, 2024, Comcast Corporation filed a supplemental notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Maine regarding a data breach affecting the sensitive information of more than 237,000 people. However, the breach didn’t involve Comcast’s network; Financial Business and Consumer Solutions, Inc. (“FBCS”), a vendor used by Comcast, was the target. In this notice, Comcast explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and Comcast account numbers. Upon completing its investigation, Comcast began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

If you received a data breach notification from Comcast Corporation, it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. What Caused the Comcast / FBCS Data Breach?

The Comcast data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Comcast’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, FBCS is a third-party service provider that was previously used by Comcast.

On March 13, 2024, FBCS notified Comcast that it had experienced a cyberattack and subsequent data breach. At the time, based on its limited investigation, FBCS indicated that Comcast data was not affected. However, this changed on July 17, 2024, when FBCS contacted Comcast to inform the company that it was indeed impacted by the FBCS breach. Evidently, an unauthorized party accessed FBCS’s network between February 14, 2024 and February 16, 2024, and during this time, the unauthorized party downloaded files containing confidential information that had been provided to FBCS by Comcast. At no point was Comcast’s system compromised.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, FBCS reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, Social Security number, date of birth, and Comcast account number.

On October 3, 2024, Comcast sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
