On April 17, 2023, reports began to emerge about a possible CommScope Holding Company, Inc. data breach following what the company believes to have been a ransomware attack. While CommScope has not officially released a data breach letter announcing the leaked data types, those who have reviewed the information claim that it includes employees’ full names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers and bank account information. If and when CommScope confirms that employee data was leaked, the company will begin sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.

If you work for CommScope and receive a data breach notification, it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. As we’ve mentioned in previous posts, hackers can use the information they obtain through ransomware attacks to commit a variety of frauds against victims, including identity theft. What We Know So Far About a Possible CommScope Holding Breach

News of the CommScope Holding data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from various news outlets that have spoken with company representatives about the attack. According to this source, on March 27, 2023, a CommScope representative confirmed that the company detected “unauthorized access to a portion of [its] IT infrastructure that we determined was the result of a ransomware incident.”

In response, CommScope launched an internal investigation with the assistance of cybersecurity experts in hopes of learning more about the nature and scope of the attack, as well as determining what, if any, employee data was leaked as a result.

The CommScope investigation is ongoing; however, the Vice Society has since claimed responsibility for the attack and added CommScope to the group’s list of victims. The Vice Society also included a link to a portion of the stolen data, which includes employees’ full names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers and bank account information. Notably, this has not yet been confirmed by CommScope.

If CommScope Holding experienced a ransomware attack that leaked employee data, the company will be required to send out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised. These letters will outline the type of information that was leaked and provide victims with steps they can take to reduce the risk of fraud.
