What Caused the BackChecked Data Breach?

The BackChecked / Contemporary Information Corp. data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, CIC’s filing with the Attorney General of New Hampshire provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on October 29, 2024, BackChecked informed CIC that it had experienced a data security incident in which an unauthorized party was able to access BackChecked’s computer network and accessed—and possibly obtained—confidential information stored therein.

In response, BackChecked stopped all unauthorized access and launched an investigation into the incident. Ultimately, this investigation confirmed that, on September 26, 2024, the unauthorized party was able to access files and folders containing confidential job applicant information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, BackChecked reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, and driver’s license number.

On November 22, 2024, Contemporary Information Corp. sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
