Corrosion of Cast Iron Coverage

Homes or commercial properties built prior to 1975 likely contain cast iron plumbing. Nearly 2.5 million homes in Florida have cast iron plumbing and are susceptible to pipe corrosion. The natural abundance of salt and moisture produced a torrent of insurance claims in previous years. People continue to fight to get coverage for property damage due to the corrosion of cast iron pipes in their home. Furthermore, plaintiff’s firms are aggressively advertising for cast iron pipe claims and we anticipate an influx of these claims, once the hurricane claims pass. We are currently drafting endorsements that exclude cast iron coverage and encourage clients to contact us with questions about this issue.
