Russian, Colombian Competition Continuing to Slow U.S. Thermal Coal Exports -

"'Central Appalachian and Northern Appalachian exports remain out of the money for shipment to Europe and Illinois Basin coal has significant price competition from Russian and Colombian coals, driving the drop in US exports,' according to Platts Analytics."

Why this is important: Thermal coal exports from the U.S. are down 10 million tons for the first nine months of 2019. Experts believe Russian and Colombian exports are pricing the U.S. out of the market. Currently, Northern and Central Appalachian thermal coal is not competitive, and Illinois Basin coal has significant price competition....
