What Caused the Data Breach Affecting PHL Variable Insurance Company Policyholders?

The PHL Variable Insurance Company / Infosys McCamish Systems data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Infosys McCamish’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on November 2, 2023, Infosys McCamish learned that it had been the victim of a cyberattack when portions of its computer network were encrypted.

In response, IMS notified law enforcement and then began an investigation with the help of third-party cybersecurity experts. Through this investigation, Infosys McCamish learned that an unauthorized party had been able to access portions of its computer network between October 29, 2023 and November 2, 2023. The investigation also confirmed that some of the files that were accessible to the unauthorized party contained confidential information provided to IMS by PHL Variable Insurance Company.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Infosys McCamish Systems reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.

On July 19, 2024, Infosys McCamish Systems sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident.
