Mozilla, creator of the Firefox browser and a stalwart proponent of privacy and cybersecurity, ranked the most popular remote meeting apps according to privacy criteria.[1] The results show that the majority of the apps met Mozilla’s minimum-security requirements. Zoom, which has faced reports of privacy and security lapses[2] since it gained immense popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, scored 5/5 on the test.
Several cybersecurity regulations and regional laws have been implemented in the last five years that place a heavy emphasis on security, privacy, and the protection of personal data—the General Data Protection Regulation chief among them. The United States government has also significantly increased its cybersecurity requirements for contractors and vendors.
Companies that find themselves working and holding meetings remotely have opened another vulnerability in their networks that could allow hackers access to sensitive information. Mozilla’s work testing the apps is a good primer for companies looking to keep working during the pandemic and maintain cybersecurity.
