What Caused the Benefits Management Group Data Breach?

The Benefits Management Group data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Benefits Management Group’s filing with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights provides only limited information on what led up to the breach. However, BMGI has also posted a website notice describing the incident in greater detail.

According to these sources, on November 26, 2024, Benefits Management Group was made aware of suspicious activity within its computer network. In response, BMGI secured its systems and then launched an investigation into the incident with the help of outside cybersecurity experts.

Through this investigation, on November 8, 2024, Benefits Management Group concluded that the suspicious activity was due to a cybersecurity event and that an unauthorized actor was able to access—and may have obtained—files containing confidential information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Benefits Management Group reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While this review process is ongoing, BMGI explained that the breached information may include your name, Social Security number, address, and date of birth.

On January 24, 2025, Benefits Management Group sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
