On January 2, 2024, DentalXChange filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Montana after discovering that an unauthorized party was able to access information belonging to certain dental care providers’ patients. In this notice, DentalXChange explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names, addresses, dates of birth, and insurance information, including subscriber IDs and a list of dental procedures patients had performed by their providers. Upon completing its investigation, DentalXChange began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What Caused the DentalXChange Data Breach?

The DentalXChange data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, DentalXChange’s filing with the Attorney General of Montana provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on approximately August 11, 2023, DentalXChange learned of unauthorized activity in a user account for an associated dental practice. In response, DentalXChange secured its systems, notified law enforcement, and then began working with third-party cybersecurity specialists to investigate the incident and any potential impact on patient information in the company’s possession.

The DentalXChange investigation determined that an unauthorized party could have accessed certain files containing confidential patient information, although it could not confirm what, if any, files the unauthorized party actually accessed.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, DentalXChange reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. DentalXChange completed this process on December 26, 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, date of birth, and insurance information, including subscriber ID and a list of dental procedures you had performed.

On January 2, 2024, DentalXChange sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
