A March 2024 study published by The BMJ revealed that women who were injected with Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate) are more than five times more likely to be diagnosed with a type of brain tumor known as meningioma.

Following this news, dozens of women who developed meningioma brain tumors after using Depo-Provera filed lawsuit against the manufacturers of the birth control shot.

Women who were injected with the Depo shot and have been diagnosed with meningiomas may also be eligible to contact an attorney in order to file a lawsuit and receive compensation for their illness.

Depo-Provera Brain Tumors Litigation Update

Several months after the BMJ study revealed that Depo-Provera was linked to brain tumors, the first lawsuit against its manufacturers was filed in October 2024 by a woman who was diagnosed with meningioma after using the birth control shot.

In the wake of this lawsuit, more than 70 additional claims have been filed against the manufacturers of Depo-Provera, Depo SubQ Provera 104, or “authorized generic” versions of the Depo shot.

In February 2025, 22 Depo-Provera lawsuits that had been filed in California, Florida, Indiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania were consolidated in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) in the Northern District of Florida before Judge M.Casey Rodgers.

Consolidating some of the ongoing Depo-Provera meningioma lawsuits in an MDL may help to expedite the discovery and trial phases of this litigation and make it easier for women with brain tumors from the birth control shot to receive a settlement.

Who Is Eligible to File a Claim?

In order to file a lawsuit, women who used the Depo shot must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Treated with Depo Provera, Depo SubQ Provera 104, or “authorized generic” versions of medroxyprogesterone acetate shots;
  2. At least one year of exposure to the birth control shot (typically, this means four injections every three months);
  3. Diagnosed with cerebral meningioma brain tumors.

If you or a loved one meet all of the above criteria, you may wish to contact a lawyer involved in the Depo Provera litigation to learn whether you are eligible to file a lawsuit and pursue compensation.

Contact An Attorney to Start Your Claim Today

Although the Depo-Provera litigation is already underway, women who were treated with the birth control shot and diagnosed with cerebral meningioma brain tumors may still be eligible to file a claim in order to seek compensation for their illness.

The first step in taking legal action is to contact a lawyer with the experience in handling claims involving defective birth control products to help you with your case.

After speaking with an attorney about your potential claim, your law firm (or one of the female staff members that they employ) can assist you with a confidential review of your medical history to help you determine whether you are eligible to take legal action.

For Depo-Provera users who qualify to file a claim, your attorney will then help you to collect all of the pertinent medical records and other evidence that may be necessary to prove your case in a court of law to help you receive the compensation that you deserve.
