On May 31, 2023, Diamond Lakes Federal Credit Union (“Diamond Lakes”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Maine after learning that an unauthorized party accessed an employee email account containing confidential customer information. Based on the company’s official filing, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers’ first and last names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers or State ID numbers, financial account numbers, routing numbers, payment card information, health insurance information, and medical information. News of the Diamond Lakes Credit Union data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine, as well as a “Notification of Data Security Incident” posted on the company’s website. According to these sources, on December 6, 2022, Diamond Lakes identified suspicious activity within an employee’s email account. In response, Diamond Lakes secured its email environment and launched an internal investigation with the help of third-party data security specialists.

The Diamond Lakes Credit Union investigation confirmed the employee’s email account was subject to unauthorized access between December 1, 2022 and December 6, 2022. The investigation also revealed that the unauthorized actor was able to access other files on the company’s network, some of which contained confidential consumer information.

Upon discovering that sensitive consumer data was made available to an unauthorized party, Diamond Lakes Credit Union began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. Diamond Lakes completed this process on May 5, 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your first and last name, date of birth, Social Security number, driver’s license number, State ID number, financial account numbers, routing numbers, payment card information, health insurance information, and medical information.
