What We Know So Far About the Dollar Bank Breach

News of the Dollar Bank data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine. According to this source, on February 4, 2023, Dollar Bank learned that an unauthorized party had gained access to Standard Bank’s computer system prior to the merger date of the two banks. In response, Dollar Bank contained the incident in an effort to protect Standard Bank’s systems. This included taking the system offline, notifying law enforcement, and launching an investigation into the incident.

The Dollar Bank investigation confirmed that the unauthorized party was able to access Standard Bank’s computer network between March 24, 2021 and February 4, 2023. Further investigation confirmed that some of the files that were accessible to the unauthorized party contained confidential information belonging to Standard Bank customers.

Upon discovering that sensitive consumer data was made available to an unauthorized party, Dollar Bank began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, Social Security number, date of birth, driver’s license number, state ID number, military ID number, bank account numbers, routing numbers, and account types.

On May 31, 2023, Dollar Bank sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident. Note, because the unauthorized access occurred prior to the two banks merging, Dollar Bank’s systems were not affected by the cyberattack.
