  • The FCC adopted a declaratory ruling finding that AI-generated voices are “artificial” under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), making their use in robocalls illegal.
  • In the declaratory ruling, the FCC determined that the TCPA’s restrictions on the use of artificial voices covers the use of AI-generated voices, and that telemarketers utilizing AI must follow TCPA requirements, including obtaining prior written consent from consumers.
  • As we previously reported, a bipartisan coalition of 26 AGs had urged the FCC to find that AI-generated voice messages were prohibited under the TCPA.
